BLUE SELF

1999

Much of my life has been about control, safety, and hiding. Hiding my blue self. Trying to control people and things around me. Positioning myself for safety.

This painting was executed using large brushes. Fast. Loose. Minimal control.

Shortly before painting Blue Self I had seen a woman's portrait in an art museum in Prague in which the painter used an incredibly striking blue behind her head. I was quite taken with the color.

Blue describes the person I can sometimes be.
